Joseph R. "Bob" Smith, 83, of Coventry, RI and Grant, FL, passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at home in Grant, FL. Born in West Warwick, RI he was the husband of Dorothy L. (Magiera) Smith. They were married for fifty-three years. He was the son of the late William and Della (Champagne) Smith.
Joseph was a maintenance and construction worker for Electric Boat for twenty-eight years before retiring in 1991. He was a quahogger on Narragansett Bay for many years, a member of the New England Athletic Association for the Deaf Basketball, participated in Ocean State Bass Masters Tournament also in Maine and Florida tournaments, a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics, RI Deaf Senior Citizens, Central MA Deaf Senior Center and was an alumni of the RI School for the Deaf.
Besides his wife he is survived by two children; Sally A. Smith and Scott W. Smith, a brother; William Smith, two sisters; Jeanette Costa and Shirley Sprague, six grandchildren; Jessica, Aaron, Colby, Justin, Joshua and Jeremy and a great grandson; Hunter. He was predeceased by a brother; Roger Smith.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at 2:00 pm in the Gorton-Menard Funeral Home & Crematory, 721 Washington Street, Coventry, RI. Calling hours are prior from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Burial will be private.
