Biography

Irene Phoebe (Bailey) Cone, 91, passed away on January, 24, 2010 at Life Care Center, Orange Park, Florida, after a long illness. She was born on August 14, 1918 in Providence, Rhode Island, and resided in Warwick and Coventry, Rhode Island, until moving to St Augustine in 1987. She had been employed in banking for many years. She was a member of Woodbury Union Presbyterian Church in Warwick, Rhode Island and Flagler Memorial Presbyterian Church in St. Augustine, Florida. Irene was a volunteer at Flagler Hospital, St Augustine, Florida and loved to spend time at the 5th floor nurses' station helping discharge patients. She had earned her 10,000 hours pin. She was a member of the Eastern Star, the National 1918 Club, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She loved to attend Bingo games and social card games where she lived.

Irene is preceded in death by her parents, Eliphalet and Jane (Crotty) Bailey, her sisters, Mildred Bailey and Virgina (Bailey) McAdams, and her brothers, Eddie and Frederick Bailey. She'll be reunited with her late husband, Wendell Legate Cone and infant son, Gordon Legate Cone. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Beverly Rogers (Robert) of Orange Park, Florida, Mrs. Nancy Woodward (Roland) of West Greenwich, Rhode Island and Mrs. Marcia Wooters (John) of Winder, Georgia and a son, Wendell Irving Cone (Kim) of Chico, California and many nieces and nephews. Grammy always loved her grandchildren, Brenda Roff (John) of Gaithersburg, Maryland, Michael Yates (Vicki) of Coventry, Rhode Island, Mellissa Ahern (Brett) of San Francisco, Sarah Cone of Chico, California and Robert W. Rogers, of Gainesville, Florida and enjoyed pictures of her newest pride, her great-grandchildren, Nicholas Roff and Makayla Yates.

In lieu of flowers the family wishes gifts in Irene's name be made to Haven Hospice, 8301 Cypress Plaza Drive, Suite 119, Jacksonville, Florida, 32256 or the North Florida Alzheimer’s Research Fund. Heartfelt thanks go to the Staff of the Life Care Center of Orange Park, Kingsley Ave, Orange Park, Florida, for their loving care of "ReeRee" and all the support and kindness to the family. A service to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2010, at 10:00 am in the Gorton-Menard Funeral Home 721 Washington Street, Coventry, RI. Visitation will be Friday, January 29, 2010 from 4:00-8:00 PM. Irene will be interred at River Bend Cemetery, Westerly, Rhode Island.
