Douglas C. Moriarty, 83, formerly of Coventry, RI passed away on Wednesday February 21, 2018 at the VA Medical Center in Gainesville, FL. Born in Waitesville, VT. He was the husband of Susan (Richardson) Moriarty and the son of the late Merlin and Ida (Senor) Moriarty.
Douglas served in the USAF from 1952-1956 as an Airman 2nd Class where he worked on the B-36 “Peacemaker” as an Aviation Mechanic. After honorably serving his country, Douglas went on to become an entrepreneur. He was the first owner/operator of the Coventry Shell Station. He was also the original owner of Astro Wrecker Service & Co-owner of A,D&D Welding. Douglas also spent many years as a Commercial Fisherman, including lobstering & shrimping.
He is survived by four children; Judy Gil and her husband Manny, Laurie Moriarty, Peggy Simmons and her husband Bruce, Thad Moriarty and his wife Caroline, his sister Geraldine Moriarty, 11 grandchildren; Bob & Melissa Gil, Erica Dupre, Michael and Ryan DiFranco, George and Joshua Simmons, Laura Bradbury, Rebecca Joyal, Nick & Chris Moriarty as well as 17 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild on the way. He was predeceased by his brother Lawrence Kibby and his sister Eleanor Riggs.
The things Douglas loved most in this life were his wife Susan, his family and friends, his pets, fishing and playing poker.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 25, 2018 at 4:00pm with US Military Honors to follow at Gorton-Menard Funeral Home & Crematory, 721 Washington Street, Coventry, RI. Calling hours will be held prior from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Coalition to follow at the Anthony PNA , 15 Meeting St. Coventry, RI. Burial will be private.
