Maria Bernard Obituary

Maria C. Montanaro Bernard, 81, of Old Pocasset Road, Johnston, RI, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, surrounded by her loving children. Born on November 14, 1943, in Providence, she was the devoted wife of the late John R. Bernard and the cherished daughter of the late Pasquale Montanaro and Ethel L. Duncan.

An exceptional Italian cook, Maria was known for her generous spirit, often opening her home to host holiday meals that brought family, friends, and even strangers together, frequently gathering as many as 30 guests around her festive table. Summer cookouts and spontaneous gatherings at her home were a testament to her welcoming nature, where laughter and heartfelt conversations were the norm.

Maria had a zest for life, enjoying travels, Friday night poker games with loved ones, and the thrill of playing the slots at casinos. Her quick wit and sense of humor endeared her to many, often brightening the days of those around her.

Above all, Maria's love for her children and grandchildren knew no bounds. Her grandsons, Nick and Dave, especially cherished their weekends spent at her home and the vacations they shared together, always lighting up her face upon their arrival.

Maria’s compassion for those in need was profound. She dedicated many years working and volunteering at local food banks, extending kindness to the elderly and those struggling. Her heart was as generous as her cooking, always looking out for the less fortunate.

She is survived by her beloved children, Deborah A. Montanaro, Gina M. Loccisano, Joseph V. Loccisano, and Roberto J. Loccisano, alongside many surviving and predeceased siblings. Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren: Leann Solomon, David Lage, Nicholas Lage, Danielle Loccisano, Jessica Andrade, Jennifer Andrade, and Gianna Loccisano, as well as her adored great-grandchildren: Vincent Lage, Trinity Lorello, Nicholas Lage, Jr., Gianni Kaian, David Meloni III, Dominic Kaian, Isabelle Loccisano, Ryleigh Meloni, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved son, Michael J. Montanaro, and her beloved granddaughter, Justine M. Pinheiro.

Maria's warmth, love, and laughter will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her spirit will forever remain in the hearts of her family and friends.

A private service will be held.
