Obituary

Stephanie A. Brown, 54, of West Warwick, RI, died at home on Monday, July 31, 2023.  Born on June 12, 1969, in Warwick, RI, she was the daughter of the late George A. Brown, Jr. and Jane C. (Raboin) Costigan.

Stephanie grew up in the Harris section of Coventry, RI, and attended Black Rock Elementary School, Coventry Junior and Senior High School, Class of 1987. She graduated from Rhode Island College in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science degree in education.

Stephanie was a physical and health education teacher for the Providence School Department, Providence, RI, for more than twenty years, most recently at Veazie Street School, Providence, RI. She was an avid New England sports fan who loved her Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots and Boston Celtics. She was also a die-hard fan of the North Carolina Tar Heels basketball team. In her youth and through college she enjoyed playing softball and basketball for her school teams. She coached the women’s basketball team at Johnson & Wales University, Providence, RI, as well as played and coached a Coventry women’s softball team. She also enjoyed coaching summer basketball camps at Providence College and Bishop Hendricken High School. Steph enjoyed music of all kinds and especially looked forward to attending Amy Grant and Tim McGraw concerts. She loved her family, friends and her faithful and constant companion, Remy. Her nephews, Garrett and Brandon, meant the world to her, and she loved taking them to sporting events as well as sneaker shopping.

Stephanie is survived by a brother, Mark S. Brown and his husband, Kraig V. Kissinger, of Pennsylvania; a sister, Karen Brown Ballou and her husband, Jason, and their children, Garrett and Brandon Ballou, of West Greenwich; an uncle, George A. Raboin and his wife Nancy, of Florida; and an aunt, Annette Desrocher, of West Warwick. She is also survived by her beloved surrogate parents, Linda and Martin Murphy, of Warwick, as well as many dear cousins and friends.  She was predeceased by her paternal grandparents, Viola (Knight) and George A. Brown, Sr.; her maternal grandparents, Theresa (Raboin) and Lionel J. Raboin; uncles and aunts, Robert A. Raboin, Richard J. Desrocher, Alan K. and Helen (Page) Brown, Gloria (Brown) and John Barrentine, and Chester L. Brown.

Per Stephanie’s request, funeral services are private. Burial will be in the Notre Dame Cemetery, West Warwick, RI. A celebration of life will be planned for a future date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Stephanie’s memory may be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Jimmy Fund
