Elsie (Smith) Redman

October 9, 1927 ~ March 10, 2017 (age 89) 89 Years Old


Elsie Smith Redman, mother of nine, passed away on Thursday March 9, 2017, surrounded by her husband Robert of sixty-eight years and her children and grandchildren. She was born in Riverside, RI in 1927 to Floretta and Clifford Smith. She is survived by her husband Robert, her children; Clifford (Barbara), Gary (Cynthia), Robert (Beverly), Thomas, Suzan Charlebois (Ronald), Linda Payne, Lori Santoro (Mike), Cindy Redman (Richard Castaldi), thirteen grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. Her son Ronald Redman predeceased her. She is survived by her siblings; Joan Smith, Edward Smith, and Kenneth Smith of Riverside, and her sister-cousin Marjorie Honey Grant, and many nieces and nephews.

Elsie was a Girl Scout Leader and a Den Mother to troops that consisted of disabled children. She lead her troops on camping trips, making sure that they never missed out on any activities that were available to all scouts. She was a coach for womens and girls softball teams for over twenty years in Warwick leading to several state champion teams. Elsie was also a member of the Helen Keller Foundation, fighting for the rights of disabled children.

Elsie worked for Salvation Army as a Store Manager for many years and retired when she turned sixty-six.

Her strength was that she was a mother to nine children, and her heart was open to many more.

A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, March 13, 2017 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm in the Gorton-Menard Funeral Home & Crematory, 721 Washington Street, Coventry, RI. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Corliss Institute, 245 Main Street, Warren, RI.
