Donald R. Charland, 87, of Coventry, RI, passed away on Monday, September 19, 2016 at home.
He was married to the late Hope L. (Brokaw) Charland and was the son of the late Edward and Candice (Webster) Charland.
He attended college at Providence Bible Institute (PBI – now Barrington College) and met Hope Brokaw while attending classes at PBI. She was from New Jersey and he was from Vermont. They were married on August 20, 1952 and traveled to West Virginia where they were missionaries for a couple of years before returning to Rhode Island.
He enjoyed writing and took multiple classes in writing. He was a good storyteller. They had two daughters and two foster sons. The boys were children of their friends and when the boys’ mom passed away they came to live with Don and Hope.
He worked as a store clerk at The Food Basket in Providence, RI for many years - from the time he returned to Rhode Island until he suffered a stroke in 1994 causing him to retire.
He is survived by his two sons; William Geake and Robert Geake, and two daughters; Beverly Silva and Faith Charland, eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother; Edward Charland.
Funeral services will be private and are under the direction of Gorton Menard Funeral Home and Crematory, 721 Washington Street, Coventry, RI.
